Structure and function of ribosome biogenesis factors and their functional complexes with small ribosomal subunit RNAs and RNPs
Ribosome assembly in eukaryotes is a highly complex process that requires the concerted action of ~ 200 ribosome assembly factors. Important structural and functional insights into their role in ribosome assembly can be obtained using their conserved archaeal homologs. We will investigate the structural basis for the functional interactions between ribosome assembly factors, ribosomal proteins and rRNA-elements involved in the late stages of small ribosomal subunit biogenesis with a focus on ribosomal proteins-chaperone systems. We will directly compare archaeal and eukaryotic systems to gain insight into the evolution of the ribosome assembly pathway.
