Lightly unmasked: Large protein subdomains can be masked and photolytically released using aptamers with a suitable photocleavable linker. No structural knowledge of the protein site is needed. Thrombin Exosite I activity can be efficiently regulated with this approach, allowing light-controlled activation of blood clotting.
